Why Does PSLI Exist?

The Pacific School Leadership Institute (PSLI) is a new event for the Northwest. The vision for this event was born of a growing realization that our school administrators and school board members need a place to receive encouragement and teaching both from instructors and from each other. In November of 2018 the ministry of the Western Fellowship voted to proceed with a school board-related meeting, and they tasked the Western Fellowship Teacher’s Institute (WFTI) board with planning the new event.

As the generations come and go, it is becoming harder for us to remember the provocations that moved our forefathers to start their own Christian schools. As we forget the impetus that motivated them, we also give up the purpose and vigor that burned within them. The mission statement of PSLI is “To reinforce purpose and vigor for Christian education.” PSLI is intended to remind us of the reasons for our schools, and reinforce how worthy they are of our staunch commitment and hard work.

School board members are usually assigned a job they did not ask for, and many of them feel inadequate for the responsibilities given them. The work of directing the school is often complex and time consuming, sometimes messy and bewildering. Inexperience frequently makes school board members feel ignorant of the needs of school and teachers; they may not comprehend the importance of issues facing them; they might not incorporate effective solutions to school problems. PSLI is intended to help blow away the fog that can enshroud affairs facing our schools, and assist in giving our school board members tools and ideas to help them positively impact their schools and churches.

Head teachers/principals also face the dilemmas of school alongside the school boards. Teaching and administrating gives them a unique perspective on the needs and demands of school. Though familiar with daily school operations, they also can benefit from encouragement and reminders of the “big picture” they are laboring in. PSLI is intended to help encourage and invigorate our teachers and principals, and aid in giving clarity to the trends and needs facing them daily.

Church leaders also have a stake in the school’s operation, and they are responsible to give general direction and vision to the school’s work. They are the chief supporters of the school board, teachers, and patrons. PSLI is intended to offer refreshment to our church leaders’ view of school and help them understand how to guide without micromanaging and involve themselves without assuming the school board’s tasks.

PSLI will be an opportunity to better understand what should be happening in our schools, and how to work on making those things happen. Conceptual material will be presented to help us understand the thoughts behind our educational programs. It is hoped that attendees will be better able to evaluate their schools and identify strengths and weaknesses. Practical material will present ideas and techniques for addressing the issues facing our schools. It is hoped that attendees will be better prepared for bolstering their school’s strengths and bringing improvement to the weaknesses.

Please pray for the planning and preparation still to be done for PSLI. The meeting is intended to encourage us in the Lord’s work, and our adversary will certainly try to thwart it. Please encourage your church leaders, school board members, and teachers to attend. Many of us understand the importance of professional development; why should we neglect an opportunity for inspiration and enrichment in our school responsibilities? Let as many of us as possible come together for encouragement and blessing in the work of our schools.
