It has been interesting to me as I observed over the years. By now I often know that certain families will come with everything marked and correct and certain other families won’t, even if the instructions have been highlighted, bolded, and underlined. I require a gallon size zip lock bag to store unused supplies for each student and usually need to have a few on hand for those students who don’t bring one. (Maybe for some of them I’ve given up.) However, it did seem to help once I started sending out the lists with some color on the important items.
At the same time, I’ve started making the pencils, glue sticks, tissues, and cap erasers communal property. If they have followed the supply list instructions, everyone is bringing the same things. It makes it easier for me to reach into a box and pull out a new glue stick rather than make sure I have the correct student’s glue stick. Crayons, block erasers, rulers, folders, and scissors I keep separate for each child.
