I teach first grade and I’ve been looking for poems to teach my students (in addition to what they learn in the Abeka curriculum) that are character building, have good morals, and/or motivational. One I’ve taught my students is “It Couldn’t Be Done” by Edgar Albert Guest. Any other title suggestions?
Poems for Memorization (published by Rod & Staff) contains about 300 poems in the public domain grouped into grade levels from 1-10. You can see samples of its contents on Milestone Book’s site:
A sample from Grade two:
In my little garden bed raked so nicely over,
First the tiny seeds I sow, then with soft earth cover.
Shining down, the great round sun shines upon it often;
Little raindrops, pattering down, help the seeds to soften.
Then the little plant awakes! Down the roots go creeping.
Up it lifts its little head through the brown earth peeping.
Higher and higher still it grows through the summer hours,
Till some happy day the buds open into flowers.
