I teach Grades 1-2 but am trading my music class for a Grade 7-8 Creative Writing class this year. My question is, What rubric do you recommend using for grading work? Also, what other recommendations do you have? Thanks!
Thank you everybody for your input into this question! I see there are varying views on this matter and good arguments on every side. I will discuss it further with the staff at my school and we will see if we can come up with a policy. Thank you!
Our school does not have an official, school-wide policy on if or when a student is permitted to redo a test or quiz that did not go well. What do you do? Should we have the same policy for all classes? Should we average the two test results or only count the second/best score? How does a set-in-stone policy against redoing tests allow for a…[Read more]
I was just going to post a question very similar to Byron! I guess I will just join this discussion instead. I am also looking for a program that will be able to electronically track books that students are borrowing. We currently have our collection of 2000+ books on an excel spreadsheet for staff reference but not available to students. We use a…[Read more]
I see what people are saying about ripping people of by selling products that they don’t want for more than the product is worth. Still, one fundraiser that our school started this year is selling Maple Syrup and Maple Syrup products. Our one teacher’s family has a maple syrup business and so we got a great price and could retail at a great…[Read more]
Just a follow up on this post. I have used Quizlet for about a week and a half now and I highly recommend it! It is extremely easy to use and all around a basic review program for students!
Thanks Darrell! I just looked at that program and at a quick glance I think it will be much more what I am looking for! Thanks for your helpful and fast response! It is really appreciated.
I am teaching a Grade 7-8 Science class in order to help relieve the workload of our Grades 7-10 teacher. I am wanting to do as much review of terminology as possible and so I have been using the online quiz review program called Memrise. I like it because it posts the customized question and four multiple choice answers (which I project on the…[Read more]
For many years our school has lacked much of a registration process for new students. Would anybody be willing to share their schools registration forms with me? I am looking to get ideas about general contact information, legal sign-offs, etc.
For a number of years now our school has used a local printer for our school yearbooks. The quality has been, in my opinion, not what it should/could be. Does anybody care to share where they get their yearbooks printed? I especially want to hear if you use an online source that produces affordable and quality work. Or maybe you have another…[Read more]
In my Grade 1-2 class I have all the students names on Popsicle sticks. I pull three names and ask if they want to pray. Some do, some don’t. Once there are three willing volunteers, they stand in a row, side-by-side at the front of the room. I invite the class to give prayer requests and call on the first three students who raise their hands. One…[Read more]

I thought you might be interested to know that I brought up the discussion with my class again, even though it was over a week after the first talk. The boy who asked the question remembered asking it and we had a much more organized and profitable discussion with the whole class. I tried to bring out various points that you suggested and they…[Read more]
I completely agree with Jordan on the Summer Term suggestion. It is an extremely beneficial time of networking and growing alongside other teachers from so many places, perspectives, and experiences. Although it is a financial and time commitment for teachers during the summer, it is certainly worth the effort. And like Jordan said, if Summer Term…[Read more]

Thank you for your responses so far! It is good to have this insight into the matter. Piper, you said you wanted to know how I responded. Well, I admit it wasn’t a very good response but after stumbling around a little bit I decided to take a take a definitive response that would satisfy a young child’s black and white perspective so I explained…[Read more]

So I am teaching Living History Threads (Faith Builders) to my Grade 1 and 2 class. Like many other people have experienced, I am sure, the children love it and drink it in. But then when you read, for example, from the book George Washington and it says that as a child George”learned his Bible, and he learned to be good and honest and never tell…[Read more]
My school uses the Praises We Sing songbook, but it feels like I don’t know many of the songs. My church is the same way where we use the Christian Hymnal and Zions Praises. Does anybody know of any audio available of even the first verse of each song for any of these songbooks?
For Grades 1 and 2, I have tried to alternate my daily story time between a realistic story (for example, Farmer Boy) and an imaginative story (for example, Flat Stanley). Aside from the daily noon story time (approximately 10 minutes), I also have a weekly Literary Class when all the students gather in the Reading Corner while I read a picture…[Read more]
While I personally do not see the need for more than an introduction to cursive writing, I realize that many educators feel that it should be taught and used regularly. I teach CLE Language Arts, which introduces cursive writing in Grade 2. I find this to be frustrating for some students who are still developing printing skills. I’m hoping to push…[Read more]
