I am looking for suggestions for a good preschool screening test. Our school does not offer kindergarten, but the spring before a student begins first grade, they spend a few hours at school one day doing a preschool screening test. Then they spend an additional day in my classroom. I’ve been using the “Readiness Test” (which I order from CLP) for years, but some of the test items are a bit dated. I am looking for other good alternatives. What are your suggestions?

Our school does offer Kindergarten for 8 weeks (2 days per week.) And we find that the EMP Readiness Tests work well for us, and give an accurate picture of how ready the child is. But having said that, I’m not familiar with the CLP ones, so I don’t know how they would compare. Just saying what we use.

The test CLP currently sells is the EMP test. However, a readiness test is being developed by CLP and is in the rough field testing stages this spring. It will be a few years before enough data is collected for the test scores to be a good reflection of the readiness of the student.
This test covers many of the same subject areas as the EMP test with better (in my opinion) pre-reading testing (phonological and letter awareness).
In their current field test CLP is recommending that schools who are field testing also administer the test they’d been using. This is partially for comparison and partially because there is no concrete data on the test at this point. I am looking forward to using it this spring and seeing how it shapes up.
This doesn’t really help you this year but lets you know what is coming down the road.
