How Do I Assess Subjective Projects? Rubrics for Creative Writing

Assessing creative projects can seem arbitrary. Are there ways to make the process easier for teachers and more transparent for students? Sharon Martin says yes.

Using rubrics can simplify the process of assessment for the teacher, and save grading time. Although creating the rubric requires some initial time, Sharon says it doesn’t need to be complicated–and students can be part of that process. Students benefit from the clarity a rubric brings, and from the increased attention the teacher can then afford to give to the students’ content.

Sharon’s sample rubrics are below.
